7/11/25, 5:00 PM

The FRESH Farmer Training, hosted by the Reuben V. Anderson Center for Justice, brought Mississippi farmers together for a two-day program focused on sustainable agriculture, business development, and access to federal resources. Held at the Alcorn Extension Demonstration Farm, the training equipped participants with practical skills in food safety, specialty crop production, financial planning, and market readiness to strengthen farm profitability and build a more resilient regional food system.

The Reuben V. Anderson Center for Justice hosted its FRESH Farmer Training on July 11–12 at the Alcorn Extension Demonstration Farm, bringing together farmers from across Mississippi for a two-day program focused on strengthening farm sustainability, increasing profitability, and expanding access to agricultural resources.

The training provided participants with practical instruction in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and food safety, high tunnel and specialty crop production, accessing U.S. Department of Agriculture programs and grants, financial and operational planning, and business plan development. The curriculum was designed directly from farmer-identified needs and aims to equip producers with the modern skills required to succeed in a changing agricultural environment.

Organizers emphasized that investing in farmers is an investment in Mississippi’s food future. The program focused on supporting primary producers, particularly Black farmers, by providing tools that help them remain competitive, resilient, and economically stable while contributing to a stronger regional food system.

Sessions also addressed environmental challenges affecting Mississippi Delta agriculture, including extreme heat, flooding, wind, and pesticide runoff from surrounding large-scale operations. Agronomist TJ Bradford led technical sessions on high tunnel and specialty crop production, demonstrating strategies that extend growing seasons, improve yields, and increase market flexibility. Training in GAP certification and food safety standards prepares farmers to meet buyer requirements and expand into new markets such as produce vendors and farmers markets, creating opportunities for income diversification.

In partnership with the Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and New Entry Sustainable Farms, instructors Dr. Helene Vilme and Jennifer Hashley joined Bradford and Tougaloo Agri-Growth Initiative farm manager Otis Wright to deliver sessions focused on building strong farm businesses. Participants learned how to develop financial systems, operational strategies, and comprehensive business plans designed to support long-term sustainability for their farms, families, and communities.

The program also highlighted pathways for farmers to access federal financial and technical assistance programs. Organizers provided guidance for beginning farmers seeking entry into USDA initiatives as well as experienced farmers pursuing grants and technology resources to expand their operations.

The FRESH Farmer Training represents a coordinated effort to strengthen Mississippi’s agricultural economy by connecting farmers with knowledge, partnerships, and tools that support long-term growth and food system resilience.
