RVA CENTER FOR JUSTICE's FRESH FARMERS PROGRAM DELIVERS FREE PRODUCE TO 1,100 DELTA FAMILIES AMID SNAP DELAYS

1/15/26, 6:00 PM

The FRESH Farmers Program delivered free, locally grown produce to 1,100 families across the Mississippi Delta during winter SNAP delays, helping bridge food access gaps and ensure households had reliable, healthy options when resources were most limited.

This winter, the FRESH Farmers Program of the Reuben V. Anderson Center for Justice worked to ensure that fresh, nutritious food remained on every table by providing free, locally grown produce to families in need across the Mississippi Delta. Supported by a generous $100,000 grant from the Southern Poverty Law Center, the initiative directly addressed food access challenges during one of the most difficult seasons for vulnerable households.

As recent delays in SNAP benefits created uncertainty for many families, FRESH Farmers stepped in to bridge the gap in food security during the cold months, when affordable and healthy options are often hardest to obtain. The program hosted free SNAP produce box distribution events throughout Bolivar, Coahoma, Sunflower, and Washington counties, regions that include some of the poorest communities in Mississippi.

In total, the FRESH Program served 1,100 families, all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries, through distribution sites in Mound Bayou and Shelby (Bolivar County), Clarksdale and Friars Point (Coahoma County), Hollandale and Metcalfe (Washington County), and Drew and Indianola (Sunflower County). Each location was strategically selected to reach communities with the greatest demonstrated need for reliable access to fresh food.

In addition to food distribution, SNAP participants completed food assessment surveys documenting how they access fresh fruits and vegetables and their interest in purchasing locally grown produce. These insights will help guide future programming and strengthen regional food systems while supporting local farmers.

The winter distribution initiative began the week before Christmas break and concluded at the end of January, ensuring consistent food support during a period when families often face increased financial strain and limited resources.
